Shodoshima 88 Temple Pilgrimage Guide

Sample Pages

In late 2018, I was approached by Noriko and Matt from Sen Guest House with a request to create a pilgrimage map. Through this collaboration, I had the chance to walk the pilgrimage routes of Shodoshima myself and experience the island firsthand.

During this journey, I realized that walking pilgrims have become increasingly rare. Yet Shodoshima offers something truly special: dramatic natural landscapes, quiet and secluded sacred sites, and breathtaking views from its mountain peaks.

With this map, I hope to introduce more people to the unique beauty and spiritual atmosphere of Shodoshima Island.

Invitation to Shodoshima

Modern people just don’t walk anymore; we would all rather drive than take the time to get around on foot. When you walk, the chance encounters you have with people, the wild flowers you notice growing by the side of the road, are everywhere. Mr. Matsushita hopes many people will come to Shodoshima and experience the ancient pilgrimage culture that still remains today.
While the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage takes over 40 days to walk, the Shodoshima 88 temple pilgrimage can be completed within a week—one of the many benefits of a small island. Also, there are many isolated sites, and one can feel the ocean breeze even from the tops of the mountains. Shodoshima boasts a strong, traditional culinary culture and industry, attractive hiking courses, rock climbing spots, beaches, and beautiful ocean scenery. This map includes information for all of these sights to help you enjoy the whole island.
